In baseball, when a pitcher steps up to the mound, they can’t dwell on the possibility of the ball being sent right back at them.

Starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker #52 of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim is helped off the field after being hit in the head with a batted ball off the bat of Kyle Seager of the Seattle Mariners in the second inning at Safeco Field on September 4, 2016 in Seattle, Washington.

After he left the field, Shoemaker was tended to by Angel’s trainers in the team clubhouse for just a short period prior to an ambulances taking him to a nearby hospital.

After being looked at by trainers on the field, Shoemaker was brought to the hospital and diagnosed with a fractured skull and a small hematoma.

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker had surgery Sunday night to stop additional bleeding in his skull after getting hit in the head by a line drive.

The injury occurred when a line drive hit off of Kyle Seager’s bat ricocheted off of Shoemaker’s head and fell to his knees during the second inning.

While it’s not a common occurrence, the danger of being hit in a ball sport is an ever present danger.

Those two facts, said Scioscia, “let you feel a little bit better about what could have been happening”.

Get the latest federal news every morning. Seager’s liner had an exit velocity of 105 miles per hour according to MLB Statcast.

Jett Bandy the Angels catcher said his view of the play was very good and when you can see how it hits someone square on the side of the head, it becomes scary.

But that was all the Angels allowed, and Andrew Bailey pitched the ninth for his first save. Iwakuma went seven innings, giving up eight hits and the three runs.
