Angels place Matt Shoemaker (head) on disabled list

Angels starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker was hit in the head by a vicious comebacker off the bat of Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager on Sunday during the second inning. Shoemaker was scheduled to see a neurologist on Sunday evening and was remaining at the hospital overnight in Seattle for observation.

The accident left Shoemaker with a small skull fracture and a hematoma, and CT scans showed increased bleeding that ended up requiring surgery.

Astros pitcher Dallas Keuchel has been shut down for now because of inflammation in his left shoulder and sent back to Houston for an examination. “Just to get him up and walking off the field let you feel a little bit better about what could have been happening”.

The Angels and Shoemaker’s doctors expect a full recovery for Shoemaker, though he nearly certainly will not pitch again this year.

While being observed in the hospital, continued bleeding was discovered around 9 p.m., Eppler said, so Shoemaker was taken for surgery to stop the bleeding.

Jett Bandy the Angels catcher said his view of the play was very good and when you can see how it hits someone square on the side of the head, it becomes scary. The 29 year-old is likely done pitching this season.

Surrounded by trainers from both teams, Shoemaker was able to walk himself off the field with a towel pressed to his head to stem the bleeding. He was replaced by Deolis Guerra.

Iwakuma worked seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits and the two home runs, while striking out five.

Pujols added an RBI single in the sixth inning off Iwakuma, and Andrelton Simmons had an RBI single in the eighth inning off reliever Dan Altavilla.

“There’s a number of candidates”, Scioscia said.
