Angels SS Erick Aybar was a late scratch from the lineup with lower back tightness….

Kansas City’s usually dependable bullpen was unreliable with right-hander Wade Davis and Greg Holland unable to hold a four-run lead after seven innings. I’d rather win a game with bad stuff than lose one with good stuff.

“I didn’t get an out, so they all frustrated me”, Holland said.

Kansas City Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie reacts after walking a batter in the first inning of a baseball game against the Los Angeles Angels at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., Thursday, August 13, 2015. So they moved Pujols to third, Giavotella from second to short, Conor Gillaspie from third to second and Calhoun from right field to first.

The Los Angeles Angels look for a win after losing five of their last eight games.

Yadier Molina tripled in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning when right fielder Gregory Polanco missed an attempted shoe-top catch and Michael Wacha got his 14th win to tie for the major league high as the St. Louis… Catcher Drew Butera, who opened the season with the Angels, drilled a two-out RBI single to left.

That was pretty much the case in his only previous start against the Angels last season when he gave up five runs and nine hits in six innings of a 6-1 road defeat. Manager Ned Yost took the blame for allowing Edinson Volquez to begin the eighth inning with a two-run lead only to see the starter fail to retire the four hitters he faced. First baseman Eric Hosmer singled home Dyson and scored on Morales’ double off the right-field wall. The 32-year-old hasn’t tasted victory since May 30, but owns a 7-5 mark with a 2.76 ERA in his career versus Kansas City. Shortstop Alcides Escobar singled on the first pitch from right-hander Garrett Richards. The veteran had been dinged for at least 10 hits in each of his past three outings, putting his spot in the rotation in question. The Angels have lost 12 straight games when scoring three or less runs. Wilson will have season-ending surgery to remove bone spurs. Royals LF Alex Gordon hopes to go on a rehab assignment “shortly”, although no date has been set.

Los Angeles turns to Jered Weaver (4-8, 4.69 ERA), who returned from missing more than a month with a hip problem Sunday to yield two runs in the first of his five innings and struck out seven during a 5-4, 11-inning victory over Baltimore.
