Angels’ Shoemaker needed emergency surgery after being struck by line drive

Angels starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker has what the team is calling “a small skull fracture” after he was hit in the head by a vicious 105 miles per hour comebacker off the bat of Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager during the second inning of Sunday’s 4-2 win.

Shoemaker remained in the hospital overnight on Sunday. The line drive caused a small skull fracture and hematoma, and Shoemaker required emergency late-night surgery in order to stop additional bleeding.

Astros pitcher Dallas Keuchel has been shut down for now because of inflammation in his left shoulder and sent back to Houston for an examination.

Shoemaker was able to walk off the field following the incident was taken to hospital with his side 2-0 up, having pitched 1.1 innings.

“We’ve exhaled a little bit”, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said, via the Orange County Register.

However Major League Baseball pitcher Matt Shoemaker of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim might have trouble keeping his mind off it in the future after facing that possibility head on.

Shoemaker is playing his third complete season with Los Angeles emerging in 2014 as a rookie. He has looked inconsistent at times but was enjoying a three game win-streak.

Jett Bandy the Angels catcher said his view of the play was very good and when you can see how it hits someone square on the side of the head, it becomes scary.

Pujols hit his 29th homer of the season off Seattle starter Hisashi Iwakuma (14-11). He was replaced by Deolis Guerra.

“There’s a number of candidates”, Scioscia said.

Seattle added depth to its overused bullpen by activating RHP Drew Storen and recalling LHP David Rollins on Sunday.
