Anger in Kerala as Amit Shah Turns Onam into ‘Brahminical Vamana Jayanti’
He also posted a picture which shows Vamana placing his head over the King Mahabali on his official Facebook page.

Why Mr Shah was attacked has to be seen in the context of an article written a few days ago by an RSS man, who described Onam as the victory of Vamana, an incarnation of Vishnu, over Mahabali. And it falls on the Shravan month’s Thiruvonam. The myth is held by some as depicting upper caste domination, with Mahabali being a lower caste person who is made to leave his kingdom by the Brahmin avatar of Vishnu. “Vamanan only removed that little pride he had in him due to his prosperity, and blessed him”, the post said.
Shah had on Tuesday posted on Facebook and Twitter, “Samastha Deshvasiyonko Vamanka Jayanthi ka Hardik Shubhkamanaein (Wishing Everyone a Happy Vamana Jayanti)”. This annual return of the king is celebrated as Onam with much fervour by Malayalis. Leaders of Congress and CPI (M) have also spoken against the tweet and its implied message.
On the occasion of Onam, PCC president Kuldeep Rai Sharma and all other leaders have conveyed their heartiest greetings and best wishes to all islanders, especially the elders brothers, sisters and children from Kerala. We Malayalees celebrate Onam not Vaman Jayanthi. “Sending off Mahabali to Patala Lok was a way to impose Brahmincal supremacy”. When the king agreed, Vamana grew to big proportions and there was no land left for his third step. The BJP’s state unit has duly defended the party president’s version. Onam was a festival of equality and fraternity. Mahabali had gained prominence over Vamana.
A greeting, depicting the primarily harvest festival of Kerala as “Vaman Jayanti” on social media, by BJP president Amit Shah has triggered a controversy.

Netizens trolled him with the hashtag #PoMoneShaji which means “get lost Amit Shah”, the same tag used to hit back Modi (#PoMoneModi) after he compared Kerala with Somalia.
