Also in the top 20 of the Lonely Planet travel list: Grand Canyon National Park in the US (6th), the Iguazu Falls on the Brazil-Argentina border (8), Tikal, the ruins of an ancient city found in a rainforest in Guatemala (14) and the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador (19).
The list was compiled from all the highlights found in every Lonely Planet guidebook over the last 40-years.
Speaking about the listing, Head of Communications for Fáilte Ireland, Alex Connolly emphasised: “The Irish sights which made it onto the list reflect the range of attractions Ireland has to offer and demonstrate that for a small country, Ireland is certainly punching above its weight internationally”.
The Temples of Angkor, a Unesco World Heritage Site in northern Cambodia, is a complex of more than 1,000 temples, shrines and tombs which attracts more than 2 million visitors annually.
