Angry Birds flocks to top of the U.S. box office

According to Box Office Mojo, The Angry Birds Movie has come in at No. 1 at this weekend’s box office, taking in an estimated $39 million.

This would be the third best start for a Sony animated movie, following Hotel Transylvania 2 ($48.5 million) and Hotel Transylvania ($42.5 million). The original earned a solid $49 million in its domestic debut when it hit theaters in 2014. And, even in its third weekend in theaters, the superhero proved mightier than a fresh batch of R-rated comedies, “Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising” and “The Nice Guys”, both of which underwhelmed in their debuts. To match that, “Angry Birds” would have to gross $493.3 million worldwide at the box office.

“We’re really proud of Neighbors 2”, said Nick Carpou, Universal’s president of domestic distribution.

The massive marketing campaign featured tie-ins with more than 100 partners.

At 3,932 locations, The Angry Birds Movie was the weekend’s widest new release, besting Neighbors 2’s count by almost 550 screens.

Angry Birds, starring Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, and Maya Rudolph, released worldwide this weekend to less than stellar reviews. With The Jungle Book, Captain America: Civil War, and Zootopia all opening within the last three months, Disney has dominated the box office in 2016.

When Shelby (Chloe Moretz) and her sisters, Beth (Kiersey Clemons) and Nora (Beanie Feldstein), find the ideal place just off campus, they won’t let the fact that it’s located on a quiet street stand in their way of parties as epic as the guys throw.

“Neighbors 2” will still be a money-maker, given its decent critical support (a 64% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). Meanwhile, “The Jungle Book” nabbed the fifth place with approximately $11 million, bringing its domestic total to $327.5 million. It should top “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” at $328.4 million this week as the 44th highest domestic grosser of all time. It seems as if those going to theaters were all about laughs this weekend.
