Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis were the directors that helped Angry Birds take flight at the box office, becoming a $350 million success story – off the back of a $75 production budget, no less. And in the process, Rovio officially confirmed that it’s laying the groundwork for a possible sequel to its animated “Angry Birds” movie that was released earlier this year.
Rovio Entertainment Ltd., the Finnish maker of the “Angry Birds” mobile game, on Wednesday said it plans a sequel to its successful animation movie based on the irascible fowls.
Plans for the sequel are of course in very early stages, so anything could happen, but no doubt there are plenty of kids out there who would enjoy a sequel.
The positive results are welcome news for Rovio.
Rovio said it was profitable for the first half of 2016 regardless of the movie’s income, reporting earnings before interest and tax of €5.7 million ($6.4 million) and €76.4 million in revenue.
Last year, Rovio cut a third of its staff, hived off non-core businesses, changed CEO and booked an annual loss of 13 million euros.
Rovio Entertainment has grown profitably in the first half of 2016, even before the profits from the blockbuster Angry Birds Movie have hit the books.
