Sony’s animated flick flew past newcomers “Neighbors 2” and “The Nice Guys”, generating an A+ CinemaScore rating from under-25 moviegoers.

A flock of “Angry Birds” edged out superheroes in “Captain America: Civil War” to take the top slot in domestic theaters.

“Captain America: Civil War” slipped to second place after an impressive run atop the box office.

The film’s performance mirrors its ranking at the box office in the United States and Canada, where it collected US$39 million over the weekend.

Neighbours 2 brought in $21.8 million (£15 million) in its debut weekend – less than half of the first film’s $49 million (£33.7 million) opening in 2014. The video game adaptation takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or nearly entirely.

Angry Birds characters Bomb, Chuck and Red are pictured during thepremiere in Helsinki, Finland, May 11, 2016. Exhausted of their school’s sexist, restrictive system, the unorthodox ladies of Kappa Nu have made a decision to start a house where they can do whatever the hell they want. New castmembers include Chloe Grace Moretz and Kiersey Clemons, who play the sorority girls living next door.

Bringing up the rear, Shane Black’s The Nice Guys was welcomed with a better-than-expected $11.3 million in fourth place. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power. Animated by Sony Pictures Imageworks, the 3D-animated film earned an estimated $39 million in its opening weekend in 3,932 North American theaters, for an average of $9,919 per theater. No box office data was released for FUNimation Films’ Project Itoh – Harmony.

“Seth and Zac are big draws and the movie is very amusing so we’ll do well in the coming weeks”, he added. Looking ahead to Memorial Day weekend, theatergoers will likely be enticed by a newer superhero movie, X-Men: Apocalypse.
