‘Angry Birds’ nests atop the North American box office with $39 million
“Captain America: Civil War”, features characters from the Avengers series, such as Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), surpassed the $1 billion mark worldwide this weekend, grossing $347.4 million in the USA and Canada alone since its release earlier this month.

According to Bloomberg, the animated Angry Birds movie has already “slingshot” its way past Captain America and his crew, making around $39 million in the US and Canada this weekend.
The 3D animated take on the popular video game features a trio of flightless birds – Red, Chuck and Bomb – who take out their anger on an invasion of purple pigs. The film has already earned $150m worldwide, according to estimates from Sony.
Globally, the movie has been a huge hit, earning an estimated $94 million (£65 million) and bringing its total to $150 million (£103 million).
“Neighbors 2” performed solidly, but was 55% off from the first in the series. But the film from the director Nick Stoller also cost only $35m to make.
With all the glitz, glam and humor, Neighbours 2 has placed third this week, with US$21.7 million. “We’re not just out there trying to go to the bank on something”.
Bringing up the rear, Shane Black’s “The Nice Guys” was welcomed with a better-than-expected $11.3 million in fourth place.
While the comedy openings might be less than hoped for, both could still provide decent counterprogramming to the spectacle-driven films opening on Memorial Day weekend, when mega productions X-Men: Apocalypse and Alice Through the Looking Glass take over.
Ryan Gosling’s and Russell Crowe’s “The Nice Guys”, from Time Warner Inc. -owned Warner Bros TWX, +1.69% also fell short of expectations.
