Captain America: Civil War is now Disney’s 10th billion-dollar earner and the 19th highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide.
Civil War earned an additional $33.1 million (£22.8 million) for a second place spot, bringing its total in America to $347.4 million (£239.4 million). The raunchy buddy comedy re-united Seth Rogen and Zac Efron from the original Neighbors which opened at $49 million and went on to command $150 million.
Zootopia earned another $1.7 million and landed in eighth place at the domestic box office after 12 weeks in release. The movie opened in the USA on May 6, while the Angry Birds film came out on Friday, May 20.
Angry Birds was also a chart topper in China over the weekend.
The superheroes that have been tearing up the worldwide box office may have finally met their match in the form of some birds with anger management issues. The industry magazine also reported that Angry Birds was China’s third-biggest opening ever for an animated movie.
“Angry Birds”, based on Rovio’s popular video game app, generated an A+ CinemaScore among the core under 25 audience. The global weekend total is an estimated $6 million for an global gross of $30 million and a worldwide tally of $51.8 million. There’s a chance that Guys could slip, however, with The Jungle Book’s estimated $11 million leaving it close behind in the #5 spot.
Set in 1970s Los Angeles, The Nice Guys follows down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe), who must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star.
The average profit margin of 10 major animations, including “Despicable Me” or last year’s “The SpongeBob Movie”, is about 53 percent, including all revenue from a film, Holden estimates.
