Angry Birds, which features the voices of Sean Penn, Jason Sudeikis, Blake Shelton, Danny McBride, Josh Gad, Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, and singer Charlie XCX, managed to oust reigning USA box office leader Captain America: Civil War, which drops to the runner-up slot after earning another $33.1 million (£23 million).
The Nice Guys, Warner Bros.’ critically-acclaimed buddy comedy, debuted to a solid estimated $11.27 million, slightly exceeding expectations, which initially pegged the film for a $10 million debut.
The family film features the voices of Jason Sudeikis, Sean Penn, Maya Rudolph, Danny McBride and Josh Gad.
It looks like Warner Bros. pulled Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice from wide release this weekend, giving it a lifetime theatrical run of $328 million domestically and $870 worldwide, assuming the rumors of a theatrical release for the R-rated Ultimate Edition don’t come true.
“Captain America” is heading for a weekend in the $32 million range for a decline of about 56% from its second session – the eighth-highest of all time at $72. New adult comedies Neighbors 2 and The Nice Guys struggled to get their footing, according to comScore estimates on Sunday.
Shane Black’s The Nice Guys was never a film I expected to do extremely well, even with two major stars in the lead and great critical reception. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs have planned. If he can infiltrate the sorority and charm his way through it, the thirtysomethings will shutter the Kappas’ home.
The film follows a private detective and an enforcer who team up to find a missing woman. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power.
Rounding out the 10 most popular films were “Money Monster” ($7 million), “The Darkness” ($2.3 million), “Zootopia” ($1.7 million), “Huntsman: Winter’s War ($1.2 million) and “Mother’s Day” ($1.1 million)”. No box office data was released for FUNimation Films’ Project Itoh – Harmony.

It’s going to have some tough competition though as next week will see yet another release from Disney in Alice Through the Looking Glass and Fox’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Despite its box-office-topping numbers, critics gave the film mixed reviews.
