“Rovio and Sony Imageworks did a phenomenal job bringing video game characters to life and giving them a personality that endeared themselves to the family audience”, Sony executive Josh Greenstein said in a statement”. The sequel to Universal’s 2014 film “Neighbors”, which earned $150.2 million on an $18 million budget, was expected to rake in $36.5 million in its first weekend, compared with its budget of $35 million. The promotional campaign was one of Sony’s largest ever, featuring tie-ins with McDonald’s, Ziploc, Panasonic and more than 100 partners worldwide.

“Angry Birds, ” based on a 2009 mobile game that became a pop-culture craze, sold an estimated $39 million in tickets, on the high end of pre-release analyst expectations. Rogen, Byrne and Efron reprise their roles for the follow-up, in which the couple this time faces off with a sorority, led by series newcomer Chloë Grace Moretz, that moves in next door.

I expect this is the last week that The Jungle Book will be in the TOP 5 as two major franchise films are hitting screens next week. Set in 1970s Los Angeles, the Shane Black-helmed project had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and is produced by Joel Silver. Meanwhile, “The Jungle Book” nabbed the fifth place with approximately $11 million, bringing its domestic total to $327.5 million.
