“The first year we adopted out 102 animals and last year more than 140 went to their new forever home”, Deel said. On Aug. 15, 2015, more than 400 USA shelters participated, offering waived or reduced adoption fees along with additional perks like free vaccines and microchips, and discounts on veterinary care. “With that we have reduced the owner surrender rate by 50-percent at the shelter which is huge”, said Katie Navarro, Ventura County Animal Services’ pet retention coordinator.
A few facilities, including Dallas Animal Services, had to close early for the day because they literally did clear the shelter.
On Saturday, July 23, animal shelters across the United States will participate in the second annual Clear the Shelters adoption event. Participants hope to raise this number even further.
Antioch Animal Services is dedicated to promoting animal welfare and awareness on July 23, 2016, for one day only it will waive its adoption fees for #CleartheShelters!
Though some residents may have the misconception that shelter animals are all strays or wild, feral animals, Chow-Hayes said a handful of their pets are purebreds and many of them come from good homes that had to be given up for one reason or another.
Deel said volunteers lined up as the dog took a victory run around the shelter to the song, “Who let the dogs out”.
“This event is the flawless opportunity to help a dog or cat in need of finding a loving, forever home”, added Gerry P. Little, Ocean County freeholder deputy director, who is also liaison to the Ocean County Board of Health. Lauren Lipsey, director of rehoming for the Washington Humane Society, gave more information about the event. “The summertime is very big with breeding season for cats”.
