“They have already begun today, Head of Gazprom Alexei Miller talked to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey Berat Albayrak and with representatives of the companies”, Novak said. “This shows Turkey is an important partner [for Russia] in terms of the economy” he said.
The natural gas trade between Turkey and Russia became an issue after Turkey downed a Russian Su-24 jet on November 24, 2015 for violating Turkish airspace along the Syrian border.
The minister said Russia and Turkey agreed to set up a working group to implement the project aiming to bring Russian natural gas to Southern Europe via Turkey.
The agreement on the Turkish Stream gas pipeline project envisions the construction of one pipeline leg by late 2019, with a possible expansion to two, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said August 9, Sputnik International reported.
Turkey’s ambassador to Russia, Umit Yardim, does not see prospects for signing of the agreement on the Turkish Stream gas pipeline between Russia and Turkey in the near future. “We mean the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power station and Turkish Stream gas pipeline on the Black Sea bed”, Ushakov said. Under Russian state-owned energy giant Gazprom’s plans, the Turkish Stream pipeline will be split into four lines with a total capacity of 63 billion cubic meters a year.
