In a photo provided by the U.S. Navy the sun rises over the Pentagon Sunday, Sept. 11, 2016, prior to a ceremony to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks, in Washington. But they are keeping close to what are now traditions: moments of silence and tolling bells, an apolitical atmosphere and the hourslong reading of the names of the dead. “This is the America that we must remain true to”.

Jerry D’Amadeo was 10 years old when he lost his father, Vincent Gerard D’Amadeo.

We all remember where we were and what we were doing that tragic day.

Extremists on suicide missions carried out the 2001 attacks, hijacking four passenger jets and crashing them into the two World Trade Centre towers in NY and the Pentagon defence headquarters outside Washington. The last two record when the North and South towers of the Trade Center crumpled. It can be watched live on the Department of Defense website. Numerous first responders died while running up stairs in the hope of reaching victims trapped on the towers’ higher floors.

Obama is observing the somber anniversary with a moment of silence in the White House residence at 8:46 a.m. EDT. Cardinal Nolan wrote on his Facebook page: “Fifteen years ago, we all made a solemn promise that we would never forget. We stand with the survivors who still bear the scars of that day”, Mr Obama said on Saturday in his weekly address.

Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are attending the September 11 remembrance ceremony in NY. But many dignitaries attended, including Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump and his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

Acquaviva said that although he thinks of Paul daily, the anniversary of the attacks remains a special day.

President Barack Obama, speaking at the Pentagon memorial service, praised America’s diversity and urged Americans not to let their enemies divide them.

She fell ill after about 90 minutes at the service, becoming “overheated”, aides said, and was taken to her daughter Chelsea’s apartment in Manhattan. The former first lady has dismissed “conspiracy theories” about her health, saying the coughing was brought on by seasonal allergies and pointing to a detailed report from her doctor declaring her fit to serve as president.

At 9:37, American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon in Washington D.C. About half an hour later, at 10:03, United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers attempted to take control of the plane after hearing about the other attacks.

Two giant towers of light are illuminating the night sky in lower Manhattan as a visual memorial to those who lost their lives on 9/11. Attended by the families of those killed in those attacks, elected officials, first responders and others, the event includes six moments of silence, timed to commemorate significant moments on September 11, 2001.

As daylight ended Sunday in NY, spotlights projected two giant beams of light into the sky to represent the fallen twin towers of the World Trade Center.

Mourners sobbed and laid flowers in the grooves of their loved ones’ names, carved into the walls of two reflecting pools in the footprint of the towers overlooked by the Freedom Tower, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.

In New York City, crowds for the ceremony have diminished over the years.

USA forces killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden almost a decade later during a May 2011 raid that Obama authorized on his Pakistani hideout.

The 9/11 attacks were bad, and the ensuing events have, over the past 15 years, proved equally as damaging. We had services for those lost, and recognition for the courageous firefighters and policemen who attempted to rescue victims of the attacks. “Of the 98 groups now designated globally, 20 are in this region, the Afpak region”.
