Another black man shot dead by U.S. police

Government officials and the police have vowed a complete and transparent investigation and appealed to the city of Baton Rouge – after a numbing series of high-profile, racially charged incidents elsewhere – to remain calm.

The 37-year-old father-of-five was selling CDs outside a food mart in Baton Rouge, Louisiana early on Tuesday morning when he was shot dead by two policemen, with the entire incident caught on camera by a passer-by, and Drake is just one of the many celebrities who are horrified by the latest death of a black man at the hands of the U.S. police.

His words appeared to address concerns voiced by many community leaders in recent days about a chasm between the black community and the police. At least one officer was pointing a gun through the driver’s side window. Police say he was armed, and an eyewitness said he had a gun in his pocket.

Two officers, Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake II, have been named, and they’ve both been placed on administrative duty.

One officer shot Sterling five times at close range, and the other took something from his trousers pocket as he was dying, another video recorded by Abdullah Muflahi, owner of the store where Sterling was killed in the parking lot, showed.

According to a police report, Sterling tried to reach into his pocket when the officer was frisking him, ignored the officer’s commands to keep his hands on a police vehicle and tried to run away, a police report said.

But, Caitlin notes, “It’s worth pointing out that it’s not usual for police officers to have use-of-force complaints [filed] against them, so we can’t extrapolate a whole lot from the complaints alone”.
