Another Nintendo Patent Shows Controller With Swappable Buttons

Furthermore, this design differs from the Eurogamer report and the design features in the prior patent, which nod to fully detachable Wiimote-style controllers.

The Nintendo NX is expected to be officially revealed during the Tokyo Games Show in September; official details about the console have been extremely limited so far but rumors and leaks have revealed quite a bit about what players can expect to see.

If we remember, earlier reports mention that NX will have removable controls that will bind to a portable device through some kind of electronic connection.

Another image shows the device with three analogue sticks and a d-pad inserted, demonstrating the freedom that the controller would offer.

The patent states that this is an accessory that can be attached to a portable device.

The filing also shows a processing unit, storage functionality, and a game “recording medium” built right into the controller, adding credence to the idea that NX will be playable both in homes and on the go. The line art in the patent application shows a d-pad that can be removed and replaced with an attachment that has buttons instead. This of course makes the controller itself sound an bad lot like a portable gaming device, as it was previously rumored to be.

Nintendo NX is now due for a March 2017 release date and more news about the console will be revealed next month when it’s officially revealed by Nintendo. It is possible that these could even be samples.
