Another uprising at prison where weekend violence broke out

According to Alabama Department of Corrections spokesman Bob Horton, about 100 inmates are believed to have been involved in the riot. The injuries are not considered life-threatening, Horton said.

The violence began Friday night when inmates stabbed the prison warden and a corrections officer and lit fires as they tried to seize control of a section of the dormitory. We must reduce overcrowding and provide facilities that are safer and more secure for both inmates and corrections officers. The CERT teams were able to enter the dorm and secure the area by detaining the inmates involved.

Emergency response teams had brought the first situation under control by Saturday morning, but the prison was still locked down Monday when the latest uprising broke out. The prison is now under lock down. Warden Carter Davenport, who was also stabbed, reported to the prison on Sunday.

Horton says the inmates responsible for Monday’s disturbance were detained and moved to segregation. “No officers, or other inmates have been injured”. During a search of the prison after Friday’s uprising was contained, corrections officers found 30 cellphones, makeshift knives and other contraband, Horton said.

WALA-TV in Mobile reports it has spoken with inmates who say they are not rioting, rather holding a peaceful protest.

Corrections officials have temporally cancelled visitation and the prison will remain on lockdown for the next few days until an investigation into the incident is complete.
