Another year, another eclectic Patriots draft
Brissett was the fourth quarterback taken in the draft behind first-rounders Jared Goff (California), Carson Wentz (North Dakota State) and Paxton Lynch (Memphis) and second-round pick Christian Hackenberg (Penn State).

The Patriots, who had only one pick in the first two rounds, used third-round selections to take N.C. State offensive lineman Joe Thuney and quarterback Jacoby Brissett during the second day of the National Football League draft being conducted in Chicago.
There’s no question Brady is synonymous with the Patriots, but is it possible he has risen to the rank of general manager? There wasn’t a big need for the Patriots to select another signal caller, but with Tom Brady suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season, maybe they felt a need to have another option.
The Patriots had their first-round pick stripped by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell as a disciplinary measure resulting from the so-called Deflategate scandal, discipline which also included a four-game suspension for quarterback Tom Brady.
That the Patriots went out and took an offensive lineman with their second pick is no surprise. Then if Garoppolo gets shipped off, Brissett would presumably become the next in line for the Patriots. “Jacoby was a guy we spent a lot of time with”. We ended up picking, like I said, right there at 60 and then we ended up moving back.
The trade gave New England three third-round picks and one fourth-round selection.
“We only had two on the team”, he said.
Using precious draft equity during Brady’s career on a quarterback is always controversial.
All that said, he’s not going to beat out Jimmy Garoppolo. Given the paucity of quarterbacks in the NFL, Garoppolo could be poised to cash in after the 2017 season like Brock Osweiler did this offseason. It’s not like the Patriots aren’t set at quarterback already.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft reiterated his support for Brady. After losing the starting job with the Gators to Jeff Driskel, he transferred to N.C. State where he started every game the past two seasons, highlighted by a 359-yard performance against Florida State in 2014.

The Patriots on Friday night drafted cornerback Cyrus Jones, who starred at the University of Alabama for the most renowned branch on the Belichick coaching tree, Nick Saban. Both cornerbacks will be free agents after this upcoming season, and while there’s no reason to believe the Patriots won’t re-sign them, it’s better to be safe than sorry. “Kevin Faulk’s one of the best Patriots on a multitude of levels and I think he certainly showed that tonight”. He was projected by many as a second round pick, and suddenly he might not go until day three.
