Ant-Man is a strange, but welcome addition to the Marvel Universe

An opportunity for a big reveal was milktoast at best and a Civil War link was just too predictable and uneventful. That doesn’t help. And Paul Rudd isn’t exactly an action hero, even though he says he spent a year not eating to get into shape.

I just wonder if Edgar Wright’s original vision was to not take Ant-Man seriously as a superhero and that turned off Marvel.

Ant-Man promotion covered each city street lamp in San Diego this past weekend.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Did you direct both scenes?

The first credits scene shows Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) leading his daughter into a secret room that contains his wife’s suit, which is clearly the outfit of the Wasp. That was always a part of the movie.

Here, the actor flexes his comic muscles as well as his abs and pecs as an unlikely hero invited to become Ant-Man and save the world. It was important to me and the movie to have Hope’s arc be every bit as important as Scott Lang’s arc in the movie. It’s the completion of her dealing with that and becoming a hero.

If past performance is any indicator, I have no doubts that ANT-MAN will make a lot of money at the box office. In the meantime, an excerpt from Jeremy’s review: “There’s nothing about Ant-Man that completely fails”.

So, if someone is hopeful of seeing Evangeline Lilly in that suit at some point, will that hope be fulfilled, do you think?

“We clearly set things in motion that you want to hopefully see more of these characters”. [Laughs] That to me would be a bad kind of tease.

What can you tell us about the second scene?

The film’s final action sequence seems perfunctory, not built up to, as this has the hallmarks of a heist film that has a shootout at the end for no other reason than to have a shootout at the end. We actually cut a few tags-most of them were comedic tags. But this space is where MARVEL has really done well – taking a character like IRON MAN or a crew like the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and turning them into billion-dollar household names that are totally believable on screen.

Marvel and Disney can take a risk like introducing new characters because of the connected fabric of the brand”, said Dave Hollis, Disney’s executive vice president of theatrical distribution. I wanted to see more and will definitely watch this again in theaters. That’s what I love about the whole Marvel thing: Mackie’s in Winter Soldier, a pretty serious-minded political thriller, and then he comes into our movie and he’s doing light comedy. [Laughs] So, I was dying to see it and I did see that footage and it’s incredible. You’ll also recognize ABC’s Agent Carter and Tony Stark’s father early on in the movie.

Filled with typical Marvel head-scratching science that sounds like it could just make sense, the villain is the ambitious new boss of Pym Industries, Darren Cross (“House of Cards“‘ Corey Stoll), who has nefarious plans for Hank’s super-shrinking invention, if only he can figure out how it works.
