Anthony Davis applies for reinstatement

49ers tackle Anthony Davis, after a one-year retirement, has chose to return.

According to the Sacramento Bee’s Matt Barrows, Davis let the 49ers know a week ago that he meant to set the wheels in motion for his return to the league. According to Spotrac, he’d be due to earn a base salary of $2.65 million in 2016. I hope you’d stand up for yourself.

Of course, rejoining the team might not be that simple for Davis, who made a habit of criticizing the 49ers front office during his time off. “It’s hard for me to speak for them but the impression I have is that, from all my discussions with them, that they would be excited to get Anthony back and that Anthony would be happy to work with them again”. Don’t speak to me in code. The Piscataway native started every game in his first four seasons with the 49ers before being limited to nine games in 2014 by injuries.

“And he knows this, coming from me, if he wants to play, then he’s got to come back and prove he can play”, Flaherty told CSN Bay Area. But that’s all it is. If you come back in the game, nothing is going to be handed to you.

The team may not have much choice, though. The 49ers ended up setting on veteran offensive lineman Erik Pears, who ended up grading out with a minus-30.7 overall grade a year ago, according to Pro Football Focus (subscription required). An offensive line with Davis at right tackle, rookie Joshua Garnett at right guard, Daniel Kilgore at center, Zane Beadles at left guard and Joe Staley at left tackle would seem significantly better than what the 49ers had in 2015.
