Anthony Rizzo makes spectacular play in stands

Chicago Cubs catcher Miguel Montero was angry after failing to stop a wild pitch that allowed the Milwaukee Brewers to score a tying run with two outs in the ninth inning on Wednesday night. “I’ve blocked pitches even tougher than that”.

“It’s contagious”, said Rizzo, batting.

It was Chicago’s 11th walk off win of the season. [Pause]. “You move on”.

Cubs starter Jason Hammel was in line for the win before the blown save, but he was upset afterward about being yanked prematurely (in his mind) for the second straight start. Cubs 3, Brewers 0.

The offense was led by Anthony Rizzo and Jorge Soler, who each drove in two runs. If his foot were to hit the seat wrong or fall in-between seats, he could have broken an ankle. Gennett grounded out, third baseman Bryant to first baseman Rizzo, Lind to third. The righthander hadn’t completed seven innings since a complete-game victory over the Chicago White Sox on May 25.

“I’m finally healthy”, Garza said. I think they’ve gone through that intimidation moment or that ‘happy to be here moment’.

The Chicago Cubs are suddenly – or finally – one of the most exciting teams in baseball.

After the game, Hammel praised his teammates for their defense but gave short responses about Maddon’s decision to pull him.

Ryan Braun went 3-for-4 with a home run for the Brewers.

“Obviously, it’s special. I’m headed in the right direction”, Braun said.

“Right now, the feeling in the clubhouse is we’re pretty unbeatable”, Montero said. That was the extent of the offense in the 4th, as Haren was able to get Jean Segura to ground out to end the inning. After the matching home runs, the next scoring chance came in the bottom of the fifth.

Rizzo had two hits, including an RBI double, and drew a bases-loaded walk. He struck out a career-high eight in his last outing against the Padres as he allowed two runs or less for the eighth consecutive start. With Grimm being used early in most of his appearances, it’s easy to forget just how significant he’s been this year with the Cubs.in 30.2 innings, Grimm has a 1.47 ERA, 2.35 FIP, 12.91 K/9, and a 1.10 WHIP. He gave up three runs over six innings in a loss to the Cubs on August 1, then dominated in a win over San Diego.

Just before yesterday’s game, long time GM Doug Melvin stepped down and will play an advisory role for the Brewers moving forward.
