Ms. Abedin’s behind-the-scenes role has often drawn unwanted attention.
Abedin began working for the former first lady as a White House intern and became a trusted aide as Clinton won a seat in the Senate representing NY in 2000, ran for president in 2008 and served as President Barack Obama’s secretary of state. While we don’t know whether that decision was related to Monday’s announcement the couple is separating, but photos of the past few months show a shift. She appeared in various bikinis and Mr Weiner was half-dressed, showing off his stomach or his groin – and they talked about sex.

In one message, Mr Weiner abruptly changed the discussion from massage parlours and reportedly wrote, “Someone just climbed into my bed”.
