The researchers found that since the exclusion, 35 percent fewer claims were made for long-acting, reversible contraceptives, such as implants and intrauterine devices; and 31 percent fewer claims were made for injectable contraceptives, such as Depo-Provera.

“Simply put, dedicated women’s health providers matter”, Dr. Joseph Potter, professor of sociology at the University of Texas at Austin, and study supervisor, said in a statement.

“Texas is one of several states that have barred Planned Parenthood affiliates from providing health care services with the use of public funds”, PhD candidate Amanda Stevenson and colleagues wrote in their New England Journal of Medicine report. “The U.S. continues to have higher rates of unintended pregnancies than most rich nations, and we know that U.S. and Texas women face barriers as they try to access preventative services”.

“Instead of getting up and talking about bad Planned Parenthood is, and how Planned Parenthood has done awful things, this is something very positive for women who are seeking resources when they’re pregnant”, she said.

“These people broke the law to spread malicious lies about Planned Parenthood in order to advance their extreme anti-abortion political agenda”, Eric Ferrero, vice president of communications for Planned Parenthood Federation of America said last week. Under federal law, donated human fetal tissue may be used for research, but profiting from its sale is prohibited.

The percentage of women who returned for their birth control shot every three months illustrates the long-term impact of losing Planned Parenthood as a program provider. “However, our analyses suggest that the exclusion of Planned Parenthood affiliates from the Texas Women’s Health Program had an adverse effect on low-income women in Texas by reducing the provision of highly effective methods of contraception, interrupting contraceptive continuation, and increasing the rate of childbirth covered by Medicaid”.

In the new video released by the pro-life group, Melissa Farrell, Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast’s director of research, said that “we get requests a lot for fetal tissue”.

State leaders swiftly launched investigations into Planned Parenthood and Congress unsuccessfully tried stripping federal funding.

The grand jury decided not to take any action against Planned Parenthood in Houston.

Daleiden and Merritt were charged with one felony related to tampering with a governmental record and a misdemeanor count related to buying human tissue.
