Real estate mogul and reality television star Trump secured the GOP mantle Tuesday night in a roll call vote that officially brought the outsider into the heart of American politics.
Forty-three percent of likely voters supported Clinton in the July 15-19 poll, while 36 percent supported Trump. Speaker after speaker stepped forward to denounce Clinton, none to greater effect with the crowd than New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
“As an terrible judge of the character of a dictator and butcher in the Middle East, is she guilty or not guilty?” he shouted in reference to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. “Let’s do something fun tonight”, he said.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky took a personal approach. Hours afterward, the former secretary of state’s account tweeted a link to The New York Times’s timeline of the #Bridgegate scandal.
“Congratulations, Dad, we love you”, declared Donald Trump Jr.
Some delegates emphasized a need for a televised display of unity after the deeply divisive GOP primary. Yes, he was talking about Donald Trump.
To the chagrin of Republicans, prosecutors are not pursing charges against Clinton for her mishandling of emails.
“Donald Trump has never done anything halfway, least of all as a parent”, Tiffany Trump said, recounting some of the handwritten notes she got from her father.
The plagiarism accusations centered on Monday night’s well-received speech by Trump’s wife, Melania.
The crowd gathered in the cavernous convention hall reflected the growing dissatisfaction among some Republicans with party elites.
Clinton pounced on the tumult, saying the Republican gathering had so far been “surreal”, comparing it to the classic fantasy film “Wizard of Oz”. “We didn’t disqualify Hillary Clinton to be president of the United States”.
“They’re not even sentences”. Marco Rubio and U.S. Sen.
Portraits of the softer side of Trump, however, have been fleeting moments in a convention with a clear, hard edge.
The traditional boisterous roll call featured officials bragging about their states and enthusiastically declaring Trump the victor of their delegates.
He also focused on the email controversy while she was secretary of state, which he accused her of lying about “over and over again”.
The theme of the second day was “Make America Work Again”, and speakers were to take aim at Mr Obama’s record on the economy.
