A police spokesperson said: “There were three children travelling with the woman”.

West Midlands Police said the suspect was from Leicester and was arrested under section five of the UK’s Terrorism Act on suspicion of preparing to travel overseas to engage in terrorist acts.

“Officers continue to work with partner agencies to safeguard the welfare of three children who were with the woman at the time of her arrest”.

More that 700 Britons have travelled to Syria to join the radical group of the Islamic State there.

Scotland Yard said earlier this month that 43 women and girls are feared to have left Britain for war-torn Syria or Iraq in the past year alone.
