Anti-Zika condoms rolled out to Rio athletes
The World Health Organisation is increasingly concerned about the Zika virus but does not recommend cancelling or postponing the Olympic Games in Brazil this summer.

FILE – In this January 26, 2016, file photo, municipal workers refill an insecticide sprayer during an operation to combat the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that transmits the Zika virus in the Imbiribeira neighborhood of Recife, Pernambuco state, Brazil.
Australian team chef de mission Kitty Chiller is keen to protect the health of their athletes and also believes that every precaution is necessary to stop any potential spread of the virus. Zika, which is normally acquired via mosquito bite, can be transmitted sexually between partners, and causes severe birth defects if a pregnant woman is infected.

The Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro won’t do much for the battered Brazilian economy, but a few select companies stand to reap significant benefits, Moody’s Investors Service wrote in a report published Monday.
Temer spoke to International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach by telephone and assured him the games will take place as planned, Picciani told reporters after a meeting with Brazil’s new president, who replaced suspended President Dilma Rousseff on Thursday.
An important focus of World Health Organization advice revolves around measures to reduce populations of Aedes mosquitoes which transmit chikungunya, dengue and yellow fever in addition to Zika virus.

The mosquito-borne Zika virus is an epidemic in Central and Latin America, and the World Health Organization has declared it a global health emergency. The first is the actual physical barrier of the condom, itself, and the second is an antiviral lubrication on the condom, Vivagel, created by Starpharma. The hope is that these condoms – and any condoms, really – will reduce the sexual transmission of Zika among Olympic athletes who really ~*go for the gold*~ in Rio. However, neither of the agencies has yet recommended the use of condoms with the addition of “an anti-viral treatment”. According to the CDC, out of the 503 cases of Zika in the United States since January of 2015, just 10 of them were sexually transmitted. “Following the recently updated guidelines, any team members who are pregnant at the time of the Games need to consider the risks very carefully before deciding whether to proceed with travel to Brazil”, he added.
