Just as the final looked destined for a penalty shootout, Eder cut through the French defence and struck a low 25m shot past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris in the 109th minute at the Stade de France.

The 31-year-old was seen combining with coach Fernando Santos on the sidelines, encouraging and issuing tactical instructions to his teammates to inspire their nation to their first ever global trophy.

Recorded in the moments after France’s 1-0 loss to Portugal in extra time, the video shows the man sobbing and throwing his hands into the air until he is approached by the young fan.

“We’ve missed a unique opportunity to win a Euros in our own country”, said Deschamps.

Portugal have somewhat erased their harsh memories of the Euro 2004 final defeat to Greece, which left the Real Madrid striker crying on the pitch.

UEFA chief technical officer Ioan Lupescu led the panel that selected the team and said: “Antoine Griezmann was a threat in every game he played”.

Ronaldo was stretchered off with an injury in the 24th minute, following a collision with France midfielder Dimitri Payet. “I trust that we will be able to lift the cup”. He cuddled me. It was a very emotional moment. “He gave me strength and positive energy”.

Asked whether Ronaldo was downbeat after having to go off, Soares said: “No, he was fantastic”. The triumph cemented Ronaldo’s place in the sanctum of football gods, even as he acknowledged the enormity of the achievement by shedding copious amount of tears.
