The former Juventus and Italy coach was accused of failing to report an attempt to fix a game in 2011 while in charge of Siena, and a comprehensive investigation that spanned five years finally cleared his name in May.

Conte insisted he was never tempted to take the easy option to quit football when he was charged with sporting fraud. Especially when starting new work together.

For a manager who admits he is only at peace after victory, and has described defeat as “a state of virtual death”, it was an experience Conte will struggle to forget.

“I need these for my throat – I’m shouting too much”, he said about his sore throat medication, Borocillina.

“I also have to improve my English a lot”, he said. Conte has most likely encouraged him to do better.

‘I could have chosen another way.

He said: “When you finish in tenth place it means there are problems”.

The Italian has been giving his vocal chords a real hammering in his first few weeks as Chelsea boss yelling instructions to his players.

After a woeful Premier League title defence last season ended with Chelsea finishing 10th, a top-four spot in Conte’s first campaign at the helm will be the minimum requirement. Double sessions every day, and intense study of videos of matches and training.

“My voice is important – to call and talk to the players”. Fourth officials be warned. Not because I want to find blame.

Trapattoni signed the 21-year-old for Juventus in 1991, and stuck by him during a debut season when Conte admits he was overawed.

“This is very important because through the video you can see very good things and the bad things and the possibility to show players how to improve”.
