Antonio Cromartie says Odell Beckham Jr. is a ‘one-year wonder’

His teammates told him before the season. It’s just one yr. …

“He was really solid, ” defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo said. “People get feisty”, cornerback Kenneth Acker said. It’s not going away. Is it because there’s a few sort of communication barrier between Manning and Beckham Jr.?

But it wasn’t out of line to expect more out of Beckham than the Giants have gotten so far. And there has been a tangible effect on what Beckham has been able to do – and not do. Beckham ended last season with an National Football League record-tying nine straight games with at least 90 receiving yards, which included seven 100-yard games.

His real value to the Giants is as a superstar.

“I need to see it on an every-game basis”. And Beckham was expected to be great. On the field or in the locker room, he carries himself with a self-assurance that matches his talents. “Controlling my emotions is not my concern”. His average is dragged down by the Giants thumping the Bills in Week 4. Whether it be the tight ends, the backs, the wide receivers.

He didn’t have any star receivers when he was the Giants’ receivers coach from 1988-90. Last season, he seemed to alternate between being spectacular and superhuman.

But the coach knows that Beckham’s attitude is just as important as his technique. “And we’ve got a bunch of guys that know Coach Coughlin. He flies around out there”. Beckham had six catches for 93 yards a year ago against Reid and the 49ers. Beckham’s ability now is acknowledged by his coaches and teammates and, even more important, by the people trying to stop him. A safety nearly always will be within range for the double-team, and Beckham now draws the best cornerback.

That display had looked to be something of an anomaly following the routs at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals, but – after holding the Green Bay Packers and league MVP Aaron Rodgers to just 17 points in a Week 4 loss – there is renewed hope the defense can be the strength of a struggling San Francisco team. Or maybe he deals with injuries throughout his career. With that said, he is now on pace for 96 receptions and 1,228 receiving yards in 2015.

He admitted that Beckham ‘had the most production out of any receiver I’ve seen in 16 games since Randy Moss’. “You have to be mentally stronger than that and know that these things are coming and learn how to combat that”.

The Bills offered a word of warning to the 49ers and others about Beckham. “What those numbers will be, I don’t know, but he’s going to have plenty opportunity”.

The truly great ones find a way to overcome the increased coverage and scrutiny.

And disparage his accomplishments.

“Right now, he’s a one-year wonder”, Cromartie said Friday, via ESPN. “Not him getting penalties or something like that or sucker-punching somebody”.

The New York Giants’ fourth quarter performances this year have not come close to what the Giants are used to in the fourth quarter, where quarterback Eli Manning typically takes over and leads the team on a few sort of comeback. His 14 touchdowns were second on that all-time list.
