Apple aims to get smartphone addiction under control

Another focus area in iOS 12 that is perhaps less visible but likely more important is new functionality for Siri, Apple’s AI assistant platform.

Apple, on the other hand, makes most of its money by selling devices, not ads. That’s because LCD panels do not bend like the advanced OLED screen in Apple’s iPhone X, which might prevent Apple from creating a corner-to-corner LCD display.

Apple’s Safari browser will have “intelligent tracking prevention” to help block social media “like” or “share” buttons and comment widgets from tracking users’ keystrokes without explicit permission.

Now Apple users will be able to make personalized animojis – even ones that stick out their tongues thanks to the new “tongue detection” technology. Apple first brought third party integration to Siri with iOS 10, but until yesterday’s announcements, only a few different types of apps were supported. In addition, the analyst also mentions how the new iPhone SE will feature an affordable price tag and it shows that Apple is trying to cater to mid-range budgets. FaceTime is also integrated into Messages so you can go from a group chat into a group FaceTime, and people can drop out whenever they want.

But it’s also looking like parents will have greater influence over their children’s phone usage with the ability to check out how they’re using their phones via “activity reports”. If you have multiple devices through Family Sharing, the parent can set it up on their phone and have it sync across all other connected gadgets.

A Way, but Is There a Will?

For example, a user could say “Siri, I’m driving home” and Siri would then know to pull up directions in Maps, turn on their favorite podcast app and stream it to their vehicle radio, and use HomeKit to set the temp of their house to the desired level.

These features are a welcome flag in the sand from Apple, but stop short of making Apple a leader in this space.

Apple isn’t alone in this effort. Additionally, the company also introduced a new file format called USDZ, which is developed with Pixar.

Many critics have said an overhaul of Apple’s voice assistant was long overdue.

New MacOS Mojave and iOS 12 software to be released later this year will also make it harder to use trackers to create “unique fingerprints” by gleaning data about devices being used, according to Federighi. Apps will launch as much as 40 percent faster, the keyboard will appear 50 percent faster, and slide-to-take-a-photo will be 70 percent faster.

Before, Apple had limited third-party access to a handful of categories, such as messaging, while excluding competitors in favour of Apple’s Music service, for instance.
