Apple CEO Tim Cook launches ‘Modi App’ congratulates PM on Assam victory

During the meeting, Cook, appreciated the breadth of young talent in India, saying the “youth have significant skills which Apple would like to tap”.

The 55-year-old head of Cupertino-based tech giant told Modi about the huge potential for “app-development” that exists in the country, elaborating on the Map Development Centre that Apple is setting up in Hyderabad, a statement from Prime Minister’s Office said. The PM also reportedly raised issues with Cook regarding cyber security and data encryption in India. While smartphone usage is surging as the middle class swells, most Indians still can’t afford Apple’s iPhones and the company has only about 2% market share in a country where 100 million phones were sold previous year.

Tim Cook, who landed in India this week, said the company would establish a Design and Development Accelerator in Bengaluru, the home of India’s startup scene. “He sought support from Apple in furthering these objectives”, the PMO said.

Cook, in a response, tweeted: “Thanks PM @narendramodi for a great meeting”.

Apple also announced plans to expand a software development centre it recently opened in Hyderebad and launched a program for local developers working on its iOS platform. “We’ll have a multichannel kind of approach, we’ll have our APR’s, authorized premium resellers, and these are very nice mono-branded and they have been trained by Apple, they have a look and feel that we spent a lot of time on”. With Apple having recorded an uncharacteristically tepid impact in India despite witnessing huge popularity worldwide, Cook talked to Chandra about some of the key initiatives which Apple has planned for the India.

NEW DELHI/MUMBAI Apple Inc chief Tim Cook met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, concluding a four-day trip to India that could set the stage for Apple’s expansion plans in one of the world’s fastest growing smartphone markets.

Mr. Cook appreciated the Prime Minister’s initiatives for renewable energy.

Modi took to Twitter to thank Cook for helping launch the updated app and urged followers on social media to get involved.

Cook made the stop while returning from India where he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “You will also enjoy the daily tasks on the App”, Modi tweeted.

Cook also mentioned his visit to the Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai, and watching a cricket match.
