Apple does away with the headphone jack

Rumors about Apple’s audio plans circulated in advance of today’s launch event, with some people questioning the move away from the familiar and widely available 3.5 mm plug and jack. Pre-orders start this month and shipping starts September 16.

No, the company didn’t go gaga with a ton of new features on the 9 (on up) iPhone 7 and 9 iPhone 7 Plus that Tim Cook unveiled at San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium Wednesday here, and that hit stores a week from Friday.

The iPhone is Apple’s bread and butter.

Apple isn’t the first major company to do sell wireless earbuds. It may seem prosaic, but the improved water resistance may be the most critical for most users. It’s a safe bet the company is already working on something to make a big splash this time next year, when the iPhone turns 10 years old.

Also, people are getting used to wireless headphones.

On Wednesday, several buyback websites offered between about $230 and $380 for a 64-gigabyte iPhone 6s in good condition on the AT&T network. The cameras on the new smartphones also have flash capability with four LEDs, providing more light and covering a greater distance than earlier models. The home button is more versatile.

Devoid of wires the new AirPods are said to have a battery life of five hours.

As far as processor goes, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus works on a new A10 system on a chip (SoC). Also, there are two new colors, black and jet black that come alongside gold and rose gold. And, finally, the 16GB entry level version has been nixed. The new model comes in 32GB, 128GB and 256GB storage versions.

And then, of course, there is the headphone jack, or lack thereof.

Apple’s twin lens setup is wide angle and telephoto in the iPhone 7 Plus.

The rumors were true: Apple ditched the analog headphone jack with the iPhone 7 and is instead switching to Lightning-based headphones and Bluetooth options.

And while Apple may see the shift as an act of courage, it remains to be seen whether or not it will be a stroke of genius or a technology fail for them. They’re powered by an Apple-designed processor and special software that Schiller said will let users easily sync the wireless buds to their iPhone, Apple Watch and other Apple devices. The BeatsX has a claimed battery life of eight hours on a full charge, while the Powerbeats 3 and Solo3 claim to run for 12 hours and 40 hours respectively. The headphones include microphones and one-tap Siri access, powered by built-in accelerometers. The wireless AirPods including charging case will be available for Rs 15,400 beginning in late October.

But a few years of incremental updates also could be encouraging customers to settle for an iPhone that’s new to them, but not the newest.

About 42 percent plan to buy an older model, up from about 29 percent before the launch of the iPhone 6s a year ago, according to Baird’s survey.

The device is waterproof up to 50 meters deep.

Apple’s latest iPhone may be more notable for what’s missing from previous models than what’s being added.

Across Asia, shares of Apple suppliers were broadly mixed in the wake of the iPhone 7 and Apple Watch Series 2 launches, confounding analysts’ predictions of likely beneficiaries. It comes with more vivid screen and ceramic material. Apple is no longer selling the high-end Apple Watch Edition, an actual gold device that cost between $10,000 and $17,000. The video game, Super Mario Run, will be available by the end of year. You can play against players around the world. It’s not an Apple Car, but it was a huge crowd pleaser.
