Apple enjoys record year but iPhone sales miss target

The quarterly net profit of $11.1 billion, or $1.96 per diluted share, compares with a net profit of $8.5 billion, or $1.42 per diluted share on revenues of $42.1 billion, in the year-ago quarter.

“Sales for iPhone 6S Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple’s history”, said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a press statement. Worldwide sales accounted for 62 per cent of the quarter’s revenue, with the greatest jump seen in China, with revenue doubling to $12.52 billion.

With most investors eyes looking toward the holiday season and especially growth for the iPhone, Apple said it expects to generate revenue during the holiday quarter of between $75.5 billion and $77.5 billion. While the numbers are overwhelming, the low end forecast was below the estimates made by Wall Street and would represent only a 4% growth over the same period past year.

Apple revealed it sold 48 million iPhones during the period.

“Expanded availability” of the Apple Watch was also cited as a reason for the firm’s continued performance, but once again it has neglected to provide sales figures.

IPhone: For the fiscal 2015 fourth quarter ending September 30, iPhone sales rose 22.3 percent in units to 48 million, and dollar sales rose 36 percent to $32.2 billion.

As expected, the company’s iPhone is still the main source of revenue, with Apple reporting sales of 300 million devices during the 2015 fiscal year, out of which 231 million being iPhones, 55 million iPads, and 21 million Macs.

Mac sales also increased to 5.71 million compared to the 5.6 million a year before.

Apple continues to ride the wave of the growing middle class in China with the tech giant posting a new record quarterly profit.

Apps remain all the rage, and Apple Pay in iPhone has helped double the company’s profit. The quarter reflects initial sales of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, the new model that the Cupertino, California-based company introduced in September.
