Apple Pay MasterCard users can travel around London for free

For starters the free rides are only applicable on Mondays, hence the name “Fare Free Mondays”. Anything more than that and you will be charged for the difference, but if you’re not a particularly heavy user of public transport, then this deal sounds like a pretty good one.

Mobile payment services are rapidly gaining momentum and a number of options now fight for dominance.

If you have Apple Pay configured with MasterCard, you can expect free rides beginning today and running each Monday through December 14 in London. Samsung Pay, Apple Pay, Android Pay, all compete in the same category and each of them wants to stand out from the crowd and attract more customers. The service has just launched in Australia and Canada, making Apple Pay available in four countries including the US and UK.

Apple and Mastercard are giving free Tube travel to people on the next four Mondays.

The offer’s limited to owners of the gadgets listed above, as well as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, who also happen to have a MasterCard credit or debit card hooked up to Apple Pay.

MasterCard’s United Kingdom and Ireland president Mark Barnett said: “The move by TfL [Transport for London] previous year to accept contactless cards and devices on London Underground has been a phenomenal catalyst to the growth in contactless payments across the UK”. Apple Pay now works on the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, the Apple Watch, the iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, iPad mini 4, and iPad mini 3.
