Apple releases OS X 10.10.5 update

At some point this fall Yosemite will be replaced with OS X 10.11, also known as El Capitan. Given the number of security fixes, I’d encourage you to install these updates soon, since they’re more important than the release notes might imply. It would seem likely that Apple’s release was timed to follow the Black Hat and DEFCON security conferences, where privately reported security vulnerabilities might be made public. Additionally, OS X 10.10.5 should offer improved security, another key feature Apple has been working on, and tweaks to compatibility and stability. We recommend backing up your computer via Time Machine or other backup software before installing the update. The so-called DYLD_PRINT_TO_FILE privilege escalation vulnerability could allow malware to gain root access to a Mac. The update also fixes an extensive list of security problems in Apache, Bluetooth, CloudKit, the OS kernel, and a handful of other apps and services-all of that information is available here.
