Apple’s First Store in Singapore is Powered by the Sun

Singapore, the site of one of Apple’s largest overseas campuses, is small and densely populated, leaving little room for large, ground-mounted solar arrays. Singapore’s Apple Store will join their U.S. counterparts in being completely run on renewable energy, with the only difference being that Singapore’s store will be run on solar energy thanks to our proximity to the equator.

Apple today announced a deal to move all of its operations in Singapore to 100 percent renewable energy, working with partner Sunseap Group to take advantage of rooftops in the densely populated city-state for solar power generation, reports Reuters. Energy will be obtained from solar panels laid on the rooftops of 800 buildings.

“We are confident that this pioneering business model… will help Singapore address our space scarcity challenge and spur even more companies in Singapore to scale their renewable energy usage”, said Mr Goh Chee Kiong, EDB’s executive director for cleantech.

At 33 megawatt-peak capacity, Apple’s purchase is the largest by any commercial company here. Apple also said it will open its first store in Singapore, which will be powered by the programme.

Under the agreement, Sunseap supplies power at a preferential rate compared with retail electricity tariffs.

Apple has not confirmed the location or the opening date of the Apple Store yet. The island-state has always been in list of day one product launches alongside bigger markets such as the USA, Hong Kong and Japan, but has never had an Apple Store. The organization has also posted job listings for Apple Geniuses and also other retail positions.

Apple has confirmed that its own store will provide after-sales service such as repairs and diagnostics, now provided through third-party contractors.
