Apple’s iPhone 7 is not the revolution it needs

The AirPods look like the typical headphones that have shipped with all iPhones and iPods for the past few years, with their wires snipped off and elongated stems in place of them.

The newly-launched Apple Watch Series 2 will be available in gold, rose gold, silver or space grey aluminium, or silver or space black stainless steel cases paired with a wide variety of bands starting at Rs 32,900. The model – dubbed the Apple Watch Series 2 – is meant to appeal to fitness fanatics. They will cost $159 and be available in late October.

The iPhone 6s-owning Maven’s main beef here is that the company should have included its new Air Pods in the iPhone 7 package.

A tiny footnote at the bottom of the webpage clarifies that while the jet black iPhone 7’s surface is “equally as hard as other anodized Apple products”, the “high shine may show fine micro-abrasions with use”.

The new 4.7-inch iPhone 7 and 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus are embedded with what many have described as underwhelming features already adopted by rivals, such as water and dust resistance, a wide-angle camera and optical image stabilization. The options don’t end there either, as there’s a new ceramic model in the lineup, and it’s touted to be four times more durable than stainless steel.

Coming later this year, the dual 12-megapixel cameras also enable a new depth-of-field effect, using both cameras on iPhone 7 Plus to capture images. Waterproofing down to 50 meters (164 feet) has allowed Apple to build swim tracking into the device, while Global Positioning System means joggers can map out their runs without carrying an iPhone. It now has the same CPU that powers the Series 2 Apple Watch.

And now we come to the controversial bit – the headphone jack has indeed been dropped.

Apple says it took “courage” to launch an iPhone without a headphone jack. Unveiled at a press event in San Francisco on Wednesday, the iPhone 7 and its larger iPhone 7 Plus cousin are iterative additions to the lineup at best and potentially off-putting to consumers at worst. Still, Samsung (OTCMKTS:SSNLF) did hand Apple a gift with its exploding Galaxy Note 7 recall.

BuzzFeed, which has published details of an interaction with John Ternus, Vice President of Mac, iPad, Ecosystem and Audio Engineering at Apple, the AirPods can in fact pair with other Bluetooth-enabled devices, a fact that wasn’t quite certain at first.

Preorders of the new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus start on Friday, so we’ll soon know if Apple was able to capitalize on its rival’s misfortune.
