Apple solves iPhone battery woes with new Smart Battery Case

Low battery is the bane of every smartphone user, especially those with iPhones, and Apple has just released its first battery case for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6 to tackle the problem.

The case, which slips over the iPhone rather than bolt around it, will come in two colours – charcoal or white. Apple is using silicone as the main material like on its other cases.

While this could be a death kneel for a number of third party accessory makers like Mophie, this is also admission on Apple’s part that the battery of the iPhone at least the smaller iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S, isn’t ideal.

If you spend your days in an office with subdued designer lighting in hyper-connected Silicon Valley, where the nearest cell tower is no more than a few hundred meters away, you’re going to get something close to the maximum theoretical battery life as your screen dims and the phone whispers to the nearby network. All in all, it looks pretty similar to Apple’s current cases, although, of course, with that extra bump on the back and chin on the bottom.

The core raison d’être of the case is to make it easy for you to charge your phone without having to carry a charger and find an electrical outlet.

Apple claims that simultaneously charging the Smart Battery Case and iPhone yields over 25 hours of talk time, 18 hours of internet usage, and over 20 hours of video playback.

With the iPhone 6S, Apple actually reduced the size of the battery from that of the iPhone 6.

Unlike most battery cases available today, this one is charged via Apple’s standard Lightning cable.
