Apple Store may start suggesting items based on your purchases

Bloomberg reports that the app could showcase these recommendations in a new For You tab, and that the new app will be universal; now, the Apple Store apps for the iPhone and iPad are two separate apps. Bloomberg’s anonymous sources say that the new app will likely include a “For You” tab, which recommends products to purchase based on the user’s prior orders, and that this could be used to prompt customers to upgrade their iPhones to the current model.

In a report by Bloomberg, Apple is said to be preparing an update to its iOS Apple Store app, where customers can buy Apple’s hardware and accessories online.

A feature that examines purchase history could be seen as invading your privacy, and Apple has typically portrayed itself as fighting to protect user privacy. Apparently, it will introduce a “For You” tab, which will offer suggestions of apps that you might like based on previous purchases and downloads.

The privacy implications of the move are unclear; Apple will use a customer’s purchase history to suggest additional relevant products for them to buy, a tactic already heralded by most other online stores like Amazon. Right now, the Apple Store app for iPhone and iPad carry their own design languages with the iPad app focusing on interactive photo galleries. There is now no way for users to get customized recommendations on the apps that they should download, as users instead have to browse through the apps by themselves and see if anything catches their interest.

Both iPhone and iPad owners will be able to take advantage of the new features and interface of the revamped app when it launches. A spokesman for Apple declined to comment on the matter. It will be a universal app that works on both the iPhone and the iPad.
