Apple announced that more than 100 new and redesigned emoji icons will be released to iPhone and iPad users with iOS 10 this fall. It will be one of many changes to the catalog for iOS 10.

In a statement on their website Apple said that they were working closely with emoji creators Unicode to ensure that popular emoji characters reflect the diversity of people everywhere. The colourful characters have practically become a language of their own, and that language is about to get a bevy of new entries to its dictionary.

Gun control advocacy group New Yorkers Against Gun Violence have been actively lobbying Apple to remove the gun emoji using their #DisarmtheiPhone movement. Apple has been focusing heavily on emojis with the iOS 10.

Apple has also introduced two male options for previously female-only emoji, including a haircut and scalp massage emoji. There are new female athletes, a pride flag, and family options for single parents.

The pistol emoji has gotten people in trouble with the law.

In France, a court sentenced a man to three months in prison for texting the pistol emoji to his ex-girlfriend after ruling the character could constitute a death threat.

But Apple’s decision does not mean all gun emojis are going away. A Texas teenager was arrested in 2015 over what police said was a tweet that allegedly threatened officers with a gun emoji, according to Texas Monthly. The organization’s Executive Director Leah Barrett told CNNMoney that Apple’s move showed it was standing up to the gun industry.
