Apple to launch clean energy initiatives in China

Apple and Foxconn have already signed a pact for the construction of a solar energy facility that will produce 400 megawatts, enough to compensate for Foxconn’s energy requirements for making Apple’s iPhones in Zhengzhou. As if to put cherry on top, Apple will also be working with Foxconn Technology Group to develop additional 2 gigawatts of solar, wind and hydropower projects. The projects are expected to put out more than 200 megawatts of green power, roughly the amount consumed annually by 265,000 households.

Apple has announced plans to clean up its manufacturing supply chain in China by building new renewable energy capacity and improving efficiency measures.

Lusha Niu, director at MSLGROUP China, said clean production has become a natural expectation for companies that operate in China, and while Apple’s solar power plants in China may seem like a CSR exercise, it is really an investment in the solar industry.

“We believe passionately in leaving the world better than we found it and hope that many other suppliers, partners and other companies join us in this important effort.” added Tim Cook.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has unveiled two new ambitious programs aimed at cutting its carbon footprint in China to zero. And many other users are just starting to use Apple Music for the first time, as demonstrated by the growth of its user base since August, when Apple’s Eddy Cue said that the service had 11 million trial subscribers. To be fair, its services launched way back in 2008, while Apple Music was only released this past June.

Apple provided little detail about how its novel solar-supplier arrangements will work.

It’s been about 2.5 years since Apple has upgraded its hardware, with the last major revision taking place in 2012 when the device was upgraded to support 1080p content streaming. We have music experts, just like the DJ when we were growing up… that are deciding what’s next. In February, the iPhone maker said it would buy about $850 million of power from a new California solar farm to cut its energy bill and supply electricity for its new campus in Silicon Valley as well as other offices and stores.

Music and gaming will also both be central to the fourth generation Apple TV, and the Siri remote will even be able to function as a controller.

“Apple is a farsighted company, and only an ostrich is unaware that carbon markets are coming”, said DiPerna.
