Apple to Launch New Emojis as Part of Diversity Push

The new emojis revealed by Apple on Monday include a female weightlifter, runner, surfer, summer, basketball player and cyclist. In 2015, New Yorkers Against Gun Violence kicked off a campaign to get rid of the pistol on grounds of it being “a symbolic gesture to limit gun accessibility”. Cook showcased iOS 10 featuring huge updates like stickers and full-screen effects to Apple Messages that delivers more expressive and animated ways to connect with friends and family.

However, many people on Twitter have joked that switching a gun for a toy isn’t “going to solve anything”. Of course, emojis are just one of the big changes coming, and we can’t wait to see how this changes user experience for the best once fall rolls around!

“[These include] new female athletes and professionals, lovely redesigns of popular emoji, a new rainbow flag and more family options”, it said.

But Apple’s decision does not mean all gun emojis are going away.

The swap was announced as Apple released 100 new emoji icons, including a rainbow flag, single-parent families, and female athletes, police officers and construction workers.

HollywoodLifers, are you excited about the new emojis?

The change won’t happen immediately though, as the patch will only be rolled out to users when iOS 10 makes its appearance later this year. Earlier this year Apple and Microsoft successfully argued against the addition of a rifle emoji. The robot is shinier, the pistol has become a water gun, and the poop emoji (for better or worse) remains the same.
