Apple Updates IMac Family With Retina Displays; Unveils New Wireless Accessories

Either way, Apple says the screen density is now the same on the 4K 21.5-inch iMac as it is on the 27-inch 5K version.

The 2015 iMac will reportedly have a display resolution of 4,096 x 2,304 pixels. It will reportedly be priced higher than the non-4K versions.

When you’re buying it standalone, the Magic Keyboard makes the least sense of all three accessories; the Magic Mouse 2 and Trackpad 2 add something unique to OS X via their gestures, but for $100 you can buy all but the most expensive of keyboards. Just be sure to upgrade the hard drive before you place your order. This makes the Mac feel like a step backward, forcing me to remember or look up passwords for things my iPhone just knows.

First, the bigger 27-inch iMac models will now all ship with an ultra high-res 5K Retina display that Apple says can show more colors than before.

When you look at these new iMac screens, reds and greens in particular look brighter or more vibrant, like somebody cranked up the saturation dial to 11.

Actually using the new trackpad is nearly the same as using the old one. I watched Inside Out on the new iMac and it was a glorious, glorious experience. The typeface on the keycaps has been switched to San Francisco, something Apple has already done in other hardware (the new MacBook) and software (El Capitan, iOS 9, and WatchOS).

P3 is the standard for digital cinema projection in theaters, and for certain photo professionals and film and video experts, this is potentially a big deal. Over the years, Apple has slowly been adding high-resolution screens to all of its devices.

It’s little surprise that the new 21.5-inch Apple iMac looks the same as models from the past several years. There’s also the other side: Apple makes a lot of money on accessories, and there are a lot of people like me who bought a keyboard seven years ago and haven’t upgraded since. Aside from that, it is also believed that Apple’s new iMac will have boosted graphics cards. That’s important because these iMacs were previously two generations of CPU behind.

It is a bit of a bummer that the new iMacs use Intel’s fifth-generation chips considering the laptop line is seeing sixth-gen silicon, aka: Skylake. “With our gorgeous new Retina displays, more powerful processors and graphics and all-new Magic accessories, the new iMac continues to redefine the ultimate desktop experience”. The Apple wireless keyboard, Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad all received major updates.

Most significantly, the layout, spacing, and general feel of the keyboard have been tweaked to be more in line with the new MacBook, excepting the new full-height function keys. This indicated that Apple planned to name its wireless keyboard as the Apple Magic Keyboard. According to Microsoft, its new high-end Windows 10-enabled laplet hybrid – the Surface Book – is twice as fast as Apple’s MacBook Pro.

The other difference you’ll notice in daily use is that the new mouse glides more smoothly over various surfaces than the old one did, something Apple pointed out to us during our demo session. Maybe you don’t have enough room on your desk to comfortably use the bigger 27-inch version, but still want the sharpest-possible display.

The new models replace the older versions with the original models being retired straight away.

In all, you should expect to get a month’s use out of each device before you have to recharge. Again, that’s not actually what’s going on behind the scenes, but it’s the best way I can explain the difference here – especially to shoppers who might not get to see the same comparison images that I did.

The iMac is dominated by its display, which also houses all the system components.

To speed up pairing, the new Magic devices pair instantly with your Mac as soon as they are plugged in via the Lightning-to-USB charging cable.

From Apple’s perspective, the company is doing shoppers a favor by offering Fusion Drives on more configurations, and charging less for an up-sell.

Back in August this year, filings made by Apple with the Federal Communications Commission had revealed for the first time that the company was working on a wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse 2. The Lightning port is mounted on the back of the keyboard in the center, and there’s a plastic cutout for the Bluetooth signal set off to the side. The trackpad (which costs extra when ordering an iMac or is sold separately for $130) is 29% larger. It’s selling for $79, $10 more than the old model.

As I hinted earlier, I’m not a huge fan of the Force Touch trackpads on MacBooks; I miss the tactile feel of being able to press a button on the old touchpad. The pad goes from aluminum-colored to off-white, and looks and feels massive.
