The Apple Watch is now on sale at several North American retailers including Best Buy, Target and B&H, which has the wearable at $100 off. The Apple Watch Sport model costs $249, while the 42mm version of the devices costs $299. And what good would a 2016 model-year Apple Watch be if the 2016 model-year iPhones are at least half a year away from getting unveiled and released?

The discount for the Apple Watch is now available in selected retailers, but not in the official Apple store in the US. According to Value Walk, Apple Watch 2 is expected to have an improved camera, which may also include a Facetime camera, enabling users to make and receive video calls via Apple Watch 2. More reports have emerged claiming that the Cupertino-based company is eyeing a March 15 event to launch its iPhone 5se, iPad Air 3 plus Apple Watch updates.

If you buy an Apple Watch today, chances are that you’ll buy another one in a few years. The discount, which is 29% or $100, should not be assumed to reflect animminent release of Apple Watch 2.

As the patent describes, Apple would be using the Apple Watch 2’s built-in microphone to grab a sample of the iPhone ringtone, analyse it and adjust the volume of the iPhone accordingly. Apple wants to keep a premium perception around this product. In addition Sport variant, Apple Watch is a luxury item.

Only third party retailers have slashed the price of the Apple Watch. General-purpose smartwatches have been criticized both for being overwhelming and for lacking the apps that would make them truly useful – a chicken-and-egg problem when you consider that without a critical mass of smartwatch users, developers are going to have trouble creating game-changing apps.

Along with the discount retailers have been offering to ship for free and not adding tax onto the purchase outside of NY. As noted by a recent report from Juniper Research – the same report that found that the Apple Watch accounted for 52% of global smartwatch shipments in 2015 – the lack of a compelling use case has meant that so far, many consumers have opted for lower-priced devices that have more basic functionality.
