Apple Watch sales plummet in competitive market

For Apple shareholders, the success of the Apple Watch would be a nice feather in the company’s hat, but the watch segment represents only a tiny part of Apple’s overall business.

In a report shared with MarketWatch, California-based research firm Slice Intelligence found that during June Apple sold less than 20,000 Apple Watches per day in the US, with sales on some days dropping to below 10,000 units to as low as just 4,000 in late June.

Besides slowing sales, Apple may be faced with an even bigger issue: customers already growing exhausted of the Apple Watch.

According to the most recent data from Sliced, Apple Watch sales are down 90 percent since the first week they were available. Once everyone has a smartphone they are supposed to go out and get a smart watch, followed by smart eyeglasses, and so on.

Slice estimates that Apple sold 2.97 million watches in the U.S.as of July 1, worth $1.19 billion. Apples Watch has entered a competitive market for wearable tech, against rivals such as health-monitoring wristband Fitbit.

The bulk of sales are also coming from the entry level Apple Watch Sport, which starts at $350.

Apple Watch has faced a steady drip of negative stories from mainstream media lately. Last month alone, Apple announced WatchOS 2, the second edition of the Apple Watch’s software, which will give developers more capabilities for the apps they write.

The total number of watches that Apple has sold remains up in the air, as the company refuses to provide any sales updates.

Apple is scheduled to report fiscal third-quarter earnings after the market close on July 21.
