Stock of current Thunder Bolt displays is quickly diminishing and sources at the Apple rumor blog indicate it won’t be replenished.

It’s nearly time for Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC), so that means plenty of rumours are flying around. Apple uses the event to showcase its upcoming software and technologies, but the company may also launch a refreshed Thunderbolt Display with an integrated graphics card.

The reason for the feature is so that the 5K display is fully compatible with as many Macs as possible, the website claimed. That uses the same USB-C form-factor that the most recent Retina MacBooks have-but those MacBooks don’t support Thunderbolt 3.

Despite being five years old, Apple’s Thunderbolt display still carries a hefty price tag.

With stock dwindling, many people believe a refreshed Thunderbolt Display is imminent, one that matches the company’s 5K iMac (just without the internal components). According to 9to5 Mac, the tech giant is likely to embed an integrated graphic processing unit (GPU) in the thunderbolt display.

The current 27-inch Thunderbolt Display is getting long in the tooth, with its lowly 2560 x 1440 resolution and absurd $999 (£899) price. The existing display has resolution of 2,560 × 1,440 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9.

Apple has not confirmed any details regarding the next-gen Thunderbolt Display. It is expected that Apple will unveil some new hardware.
