The app economy show is a first for Apple.

Apple also declined to reveal the title, financing, timeline, storylines, episode length or how people would be able to access it, the report said. Still, Netflix and Amazon can likely breathe easy-for now, anyway: Apple executive Eddy Cue told the Times that the new show doesn’t mean Apple will be greatly expanding its offerings in the arena of original productions. “This doesn’t mean that we are going into a huge amount of movie production or TV production or anything like that”, the Apple executive said.

The show will focus on the stories of developers who have contributed to Apple’s multi-billion dollar App Store business.

This is one of Apple’s first few original TV productions.

Ben Silverman originally conceived of the App Store series and brought the idea to Apple. Silverman is an executive producer on shows like Jane the Virgin, The Biggest Loser, Marco Polo, and Flaked. However, Cue did say that the show will be made available across Apple devices.

Apple may be testing the water for original content in preparation for its long-rumored TV streaming service. It’s not clear just what the subject matter of the show may be outside of the very vague ‘apps’. He added that the company would continue to explore exclusive projects similar to the series about apps or its push into music programming.
