Tsipras’ government is trying to balance improved relations with Israel with his party’s longstanding support for a Palestinian state.
The unanimous decision announced on Tuesday will see Greece change “PA [Palestinian Authority]’ to ‘Palestine” in all of its official documentation.
The Palestinian Authority considers over 130 countries to have recognized Palestine as a state, although the number is disputed and several recognitions by what are now European Union member states date back to the Soviet era.
The Palestinian president also congratulated all Palestinian people “on the Holy Occasion of Christmas”, and expressed hope a day comes when they would be free in their homeland.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has declined to say when Greece could adopt the parliamentary resolution.
Palestine now enjoys bilateral recognition of statehood from 137 countries.
Palestine’s flag was hoisted for the first time at United Nations headquarters in NY on September 30 in a symbolic gesture.

“There can be no Palestinian State without East Jerusalem as its capital, reunited with Bethlehem and the rest of Palestine”, he further added.
